A Tournament that Brings Foodies and Golfers Together to End Domestic Violence
GARLAND, Texas - April 23, 2012 - Garland’s Mayor Ronald Jones invites golfers and foodies to the 8th Annual Par for The Course Golf Tournament at the Lakes Course at Firewheel Golf Club and to a gourmet dinner featuring live music and three gourmet chefs at the Spring Creek Church in Garland on Friday, June 1, 2012. Funds from these two events will go to support the New Beginning Center’s shelter, educational programs, and transitional housing.
“Our shelter has been operating at capacity for more than a year now,” said Executive Director Jennifer Morrison. “With the increase capacity come increased expenses. A successful event means we can help more families rebuild their lives.
Mayor Ronald E. Jones, is the Honorary Chair and a founding member of New Beginning Center. He and other elected and city officials will host teams in this 18-hole golf tournament. The entry fee for a four-person teams is $600 or an individual entry is $160, which includes, 18-holes, a cart, boxed lunch and a swag bag. Entry to the dinner is included in the fee.
Golfers and foodies are invited back for more action during our “Evening with Tres Chefs,” at The Spring Creek Church 2660 Belt Line, Garland, Texas, where world renowned chefs will create an authentic gourmet meal served with an open bar. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased separately and are $75 per person
The evening will feature music, a live and silent auction as well as a question and answer session with the chefs. Golf tournament awards will be presented during the evening event with trophies awarded to the lowest scoring team in each flight as well as several others. Additionally, fun awards will also be presented in the evening to players who sink the most balls in the water, play in the sandbox too often, and even a prize for the individual who knocks one to many in the rough. Raffle prizes will include a variety of items and entertainment packages for families and couples.
In 2010, 136 women in Texas were killed by an intimate partner or ex-partner. There were more than 193,000 reported family violence incidents in Texas alone.

U.S. SECRETARY OF COMMERCE PRESENTS FREESE AND NICHOLS WITH
MALCOLM BALDRIGE NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD
FORT WORTH, Texas – April 19, 2012 – Freese and Nichols, a statewide leader of engineering, architecture and environmental services, was presented with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award during a ceremony on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was presided over by U.S. Secretary of Commerce John Bryson and Dr. Patrick Gallagher, Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Director of the U.S. Departnment of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Robert Pence, president and CEO, and Cindy Milrany, CFO, accepted the award on behalf of Freese and Nichols, the only engineering and architecture firm to ever receive this recognition. The firm hosted a delegation which included dignitaries such as U.S. Representative Kay Granger, Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, Jeff Fegan, CEO of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Robert O’Neill, executive director of the International City/County Management Association. Steven Stockton and Major General Michael J. Walsh of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and city managers from Irving, Texas, Tyler, Texas and Fort Worth, Texas were also included.
“Freese and Nichols started its continuous improvement journey more than 15 years ago to improve our business, but what we discovered was so much more,” said Pence. “This process benefits our clients. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the highest national honor for performance excellence that any U.S. organization can receive. The award, which is administered through the NIST Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, is designed to enhance the competitiveness of U.S. businesses and help them compete in an ever-expanding, demanding global market. Applicants are evaluated in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement; analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; and process management and results.
Organizations which use the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence, such as Freese and Nichols, continue to report strong performance even in a tough economy.

BAYLOR MEDICAL CENTER AT GARLAND’S STROKE PROGRAM EARNS PRIMARY STROKE CENTER CERTIFICATION FROM JOINT COMMISSION
Certification allows patients to receive quality stroke care close to home
(GARLAND, Texas, March 8, 2012) – Baylor Medical Center at Garland is excited to announce that its stroke program has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. The hospital earned this distinction after The Joint Commission conducted an on-site review on March 2.
"Baylor Medical Center at Garland demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients," says Janice Walker, CNO/COO at Baylor Garland.
Each year about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke ever 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 4 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States today.
"This designation validates the great work that has been occurring at Baylor Garland," said Tom Trenary, president. "In collaboration with our community emergency medical services, physicians and staff, we remain poised and ready to serve the residents who present in our hospital with signs and symptoms of stroke."
Stroke is a medical emergency. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, call 9-1-1 and get help immediately. Recognize stroke symptoms FAST:
- Face: uneven smile, facial droop/numbness, vision disturbances
- Arm & leg: weakness, numbness, difficulty walking
- Speech: slurred, inappropriate words, mute
- Time: time is critical, call 9-1-1
The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements/guidelines for stroke care.

FROST OPENS NEW GARLAND FINANCIAL CENTER
