2016: A Year of Sustainable Success
The Garland Chamber of Commerce celebrated a year of sustainable success as we hosted the 85th Annual Emerald Tie Banquet on Jan. 26, 2017 with a room full of Garland's prestigious leaders, professionals and valued friends. Keynote speaker Michael Ray Newman, of Zig Ziglar International, wowed the crowd of more than 200 with his inspiring story, "Itz onlee hard 'til u lurn it."
Newman shared a number of times in his life when he was told he was too small, too dumb or too poor to make anything of himself. Determined to prove the naysayers wrong, he persevered through heart-wrenching trials. Newman told the story of the day he walked away from a garage sale with a box full of Zig Ziglar cassette tapes, a purchase he made thinking “Zig Ziglar” was a rock band. Much to his surprise, when he put the first tape into his truck, his life was transformed by a man who rocked his world with profound and lasting wisdom.
On those tapes, Newman heard Mr. Ziglar tell him, “Failure is an event; not a person,” and, “You can have everything in life you want, if you just help enough other people get what they want.” Mr. Ziglar’s words resonated with Michael, and from that point forward, he committed his life to helping others. His high energy and high expectations motivated the crowd, particularly in areas of leadership and professional growth.
"If you have the right attitude, you're going to give the right amount of effort, and you'll develop the right skills," Newman said. Encouraging employers and leaders at every stage to set goals for themselves and their employees, Newman added, "you can't hit a target you don't have."
