(GARLAND, Texas, November 12, 2013) - Baylor Garland has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.

Hospitals named 'Top Performers' are considered national leaders by The Joint Commission when it comes to consistently practicing evidence-based health care shown to significantly improve outcomes for certain serious conditions and procedures. These include heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and stroke, among others.

"Baylor has long been committed to providing the highest quality and safety to patients who entrust their care to us," says Don Kennerly, MD, PhD, associate chief quality officer, Baylor Health Care System. "To achieve this, we are guided by evidence-based practices and have been tracking our performance in many of these areas for more than a decade."

Baylor Garland is recognized for attaining excellence in the following measure sets: Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Surgical Care. "Baylor Garland is honored to be recognized as a 'Top Performer' by the Joint Commission," says Tom Trenary, president of Baylor Medical Center at Garland. "This recognition demonstrates the hospital‘s commitment to provide advanced, quality care to Garland and the surrounding communities."

In addition to Baylor Garland, nine other Baylor Health Care System facilities are among those achieving 'Top Performer' status. Those include:

  • Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington
  • Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton
  • Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital
  • Baylor Medical Center at Uptown
  • Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas
  • Baylor Surgical Hospital at Fort Worth
  • Baylor Medical Center at Garland
  • Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano
  • THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano
  • North Central Surgical Center

"These Baylor facilities and all the Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement, and they should be proud of their achievement," says Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH, president and chief executive officer, The Joint Commission.

Top Performer on Key Quality Measures recognition is based on performance on accountability measures during 2012. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients or giving antibiotics one hour before surgery.

"We are pleased that our journey of continuous improvement has helped us achieve this recognition by The Joint Commission, as well as recognition by many other organizations that also use objective, evidence-based methods to evaluate performance," says Dr. Kennerly.

The complete list of Top Performers was published in the just-released publication, Improving America’s Hospitals: The Joint Commission’s Annual Report on Quality and Safety 2013.
