Developing leadership skills is an important and necessary process in today’s workplace. For most of us, there will be a point in your career when you’re going to be asked to take the lead in an initiative or be offered a higher position earlier than expected. As this new opportunity comes about, you may wonder, “What are some key leadership skills I need to form a strong foundation?” At the start of my career, I thought you had to be the industry expert to be eligible to lead. Though knowledge is useful, the reality is that you must have people skills. Here are the four fundamental skills I’ve learned during my time with the Chamber.

In today’s world, having a sustainable, trained supply of workers is the single most important element in attracting and retaining business in any community. At a recent workforce pipeline summit sponsored by the Chamber and DCMA, City Manager Bryan Bradford said, “The first question that a company asks when considering moving to Garland is, ‘Do you have people ready to go to work?’”

Knowing that a need for a highly-skilled workforce pool is a tremendous asset to a community, the Garland Chamber and Garland ISD work diligently to educate the next generation and prepare them for career opportunities right here at home, in Garland, Texas. In 2014, the two entities partnered to launch a Career Expo that would purposefully connect District high school students with local employers.
