Garland Chamber Hosts 5th Annual Career Expo

For Garland employers, finding and maintaining a qualified workforce is a top priority. The same is likely true in your own business. Whether you run a large manufacturing plant or a small retail shop, the work won't get done without the people who have the skills to do it.

Knowing that a need for a highly-skilled workforce pool is a tremendous asset to a community, the Garland Chamber and Garland ISD work diligently to educate the next generation and prepare them for career opportunities right here at home, in Garland, Texas. In 2014, the two entities partnered to launch a Career Expo that would purposefully connect District high school students with local employers.

“You always hear about the skills gap and that employers have jobs, but we don’t have the right people to fill them,” one instructor said. “There’s some way, somehow, that we’ve got to make a connection, that we better train the students on what the opportunities are and what skills they need to have. We need to help them so that they can get those jobs.”

With the support of the Garland business community participating as vendors, the annual Career Expo has quickly become an efficient avenue for students to learn about the variety of paths available to them upon graduation. The program has not only impacted the lives of students in Garland, Sachse and Rowlett, but has also given local employers the chance to observe, influence and advise students on the prerequisites and expectations of a career in their respective fields.

As we reinforce the need for industry and education to collaborate in order to develop a quality workforce, we encourage you and your business to get involved and participate in the 5th Annual Garland ISD Career Expo. The youth of Garland ISD is your future workforce and it is imperative that we educate and inform our youth that there are good long-term careers available to them in Garland, Texas.

The 5th Annual Career Expo will take place on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 at the Gilbreath Reed Career and Technical Center. To reserve your exhibit, or learn more about the event, please contact Ariel Boone at
