Garland ISD 2019 Update
As the middle of the school year approaches, the students are ready for a long break and parents want to know what is new with the district. Here is some of the latest news from the Garland ISD Newsroom.
- At the annual Leadership Conference luncheon, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board presented the 2019 Star Awards to El Centro/Garland ISD/Garland Fire Department. Together, Garland ISD, Fire Department and El Centro (part of the Dallas County Community College District) partnered to develop the Triple Credit Model Fire Academy. This rigorous three-year training program yields much needed job-ready candidates for state fire service and related positions.
- Garland ISD wants to spread the word that all students, no matter the circumstances, are welcome in our district. In the spring, several GISD departments collaborated to pull together community resources, special curriculum and special enrollment procedures to set up traditional and non-traditional graduation plans for students who did not return to school. The team then reached out to families in multiple ways, including phone calls, letters, email and face-to-face contact. In fact, staff members from across the entire district worked as Operation Opportunity door knockers—including our own Superintendent Ricardo López. After the program’s soft launch, the number of reported dropouts decreased by 36%.
- Garland ISD is continuing its legacy as a visionary leader in education. With the help of students, staff and the community, the district is developing a plan focused on the learners of tomorrow. Before the start of the 2019-20 school year, GISD asked for feedback from the students, parents, and community about improvements for the district. In September, the Design Team created an innovative framework to help empower lifelong learners in the classroom and beyond. The Design Team is continuously working to plan the very best for the district.
- The celebration continues for Garland ISD! With their recent celebration of the 46 campuses earning A and B ratings, now they are celebrating the elementary schools that ranked Excellent among the top 10 elementary schools in North Texas.
