As part of the Garland Economic Development Partnership, The Garland Chamber of Commerce awarded $50,000 annually in Small Business Grants to a total of 17 business in 2017 and 2018. The Chamber’s goal in providing Garland small businesses with grant funding is to encourage sustainable growth among our vibrant small business community and to recognize individual businesses owners who through their own determination and success contribute to the sustainability of the Garland economy.

Here are the recipients of the grant for 2017 and 2018:

  • Sazon Mexican Home Cooking
  • Su Clinica Familiar
  • JCi Creatives

  • Big Hit Creative Group

JCi Creatives received the grant in 2017. Jaren Collins, owner of JCi Creatives, started his own business when he was 20 years old while attending the University of Oklahoma. He formalized his business in 2016 and became a full-time creative. JCi Creatives is a creative services company that provides photography, video production and graphic design services. They also specialize in content creation from branding, social media and digital marketing.

The Small Business Grant program has requirements: business owner must submit a business plan, willing to interview, and if a recipient, provide quarter progress reports throughout the following year. Collins needed help with his company business plan. “Andrea Tamez was with me every step of the way to answer questions and offer assistance. I also worked closely with the SBA rep in the Garland Chamber to create my business plan from scratch,” Collins said. “This was not only great for the grant, but also extremely beneficial to my business. This was the first time I ever crafted a business plan and really helped me to strategize my business goals for the future.”

JCi Creatives applied for a fixed assets grant: money for new equipment and/or hardware. Collins was looking to upgrade his cameras and computers to provide a higher quality service to his customers. “I applied to the grant as soon as I heard about it! I was excited at an opportunity to potentially grow my business through the addition of much needed equipment,” Collins said. “At the time, I was running a business with outdated technology. My laptop was 5 years old and my camera was literally falling into pieces.”

JCi Creatives received money to buy a new camera, a Canon 5D Mark IV camera. With this equipment, Jaren would be able to produce 4K videos, pictures and improve product quality. “The grant has helped us make incredible strides,” Collins said. “Initially we were expecting to see 20% growth in revenue from 2017 to 2018. With the purchase of our new camera from the grant, we were able to provide better quality products and ultimately saw tremendous growth of 38.574%!”

JCi Creatives was not the only business to see growth. Intrinsic saved precious time with their keg washer. Rosalind purchased a new roaster and has new coffee varieties. Su Clinica Familiar was able to move to a bigger location after increasing their daily patient count. With the 2018 recipients, Family Fun Escape Rooms is in the running to present their business on Shark Tank. Big Hit Creative Group has hired staff and can safely store their content.

The Small Business Grant, like many of the Garand Chamber’s resources, are available to businesses to help them become or guide them to a sustainable business.
